Answer: Slavery

Slaves were one of the main causes of the Civil War. Most people will say that it was states rights, but states rights for what? Slavery. If you think about it, South Carolina left the Union because they thought that Abraham Lincoln was going to stop slavery. Most of the men in the Confederate did not own slaves however they fought anyway. Some people suspect that the men thought it was the right thing to do, or the manly thing to do.
